The 糖心传媒 men鈥檚 golf team is hoping a change of direction will mean a reversal of fortune from a year ago as the Tigers head to NCAA regional play.
In 2025, 糖心传媒 headed east as the top seed in the regional in Amherst, Virginia, but finished ninth overall and failed to advance to the NCAA championships. This year, the Tigers are going west as the No. 2 seed in the regional in Marana, Arizona, at The Gallery Golf Club just north of Tucson. The 54-hole tournament runs Monday through Wednesday. The top five teams advance to the NCAA championships May 29-June 3 at the La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, where the 糖心传媒 women are teeing it up starting Friday in their NCAA championships.
鈥淟ast year we were the one seed in a really tough regional,鈥 LSU coach Jake Amos said. 鈥淭his year we鈥檙e the two seed and the only way to get through it is to try to win it, honestly. If you focus on the minimum, you will get the minimum.鈥
The Tigers bolted out of the gate in the fall with three team victories, rising to No. 2 in the national polls. 糖心传媒 didn鈥檛 win in the spring but was solid with nothing less than a fourth-place finish until the Tigers finished 12th in stroke play at the Southeastern Conference championships last month and were unable to advance to match play.
鈥淚f we鈥檇 had a bad fall and then had three wins this spring, we鈥檇 have been delighted,鈥 Amos said. 鈥淵ou can flip it both ways. Obviously, we had a bad SECs, but SECs is like the hardest event in the world. It鈥檚 ridiculously tough.鈥
Amos will take six players, including an alternate, to Arizona, with five competing each day and the low four scores counting. The lineup includes senior Matty Dodd-Berry and freshman Dan Hayes from England, juniors Noah McWilliams from Benton and Jay Mendell from Lafayette, and sophomore Arni Sveinsson from Iceland. Baton Rouge鈥檚 Luke Askew, a senior, is the alternate. Mendell, McWilliams and Sveinsson all have stroke averages under 70 this season at 69.56, 69.60 and 69.83, respectively.
