For generations of Baton Rouge residents, Dearman’s Diner has been more than a place to grab a burger and a shake. It’s a local tradition built on relationships, nostalgia and genuine hospitality. Owner Casey Evans said the focus remains on preserving the restaurant’s legacy while thoughtfully expanding what it has to offer.
“A lot has stayed the same, but we’re always looking at how we can get better,” Evans said. “I think a lot about hospitality and how I can support our team, which hopefully reflects in their service to our guests. We have great burgers and shakes, but I think the relationships that we have built over the years is truly the lifeblood of our business.”
Dearman’s is known for a simple menu featuring hand-scooped malts and shakes, burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, hot plates with grilled chicken or hamburger steak, as well as salads and sides. Those offerings have kept regular customers coming back for decades, and many now bring their families to share the same comfort food they grew up with.
“The people that I served when I was in high school now have their own kids in high school or college, and that next generation is coming here with their friends. It’s a very cool thing to see,” Evans said.
While Dearman’s remains devoted to traditional values and classic food, Evans is introducing new ventures as well. This year, the restaurant launched a catering operation and began partnering with schools in Ascension Parish to provide food at concession stands, a move that could become a new business model if it proves feasible.
In addition, Evans is preparing to open a second Dearman’s location – a stationary food truck that will emphasize nighttime service and offer diner classics and experimental dishes.
“It’s important to preserve the classic nature of what we do, but we want to expand that to more times and demographics,” Evans said. “I want all of our customers to know that we value their time, money and experience. When people think of Dearman’s, we want them to think of a place where everyone belongs.”
