The man who was allegedly shot by a former Gonzales mayor candidate died at the North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond on Wednesday afternoon.
On May 27, the Hammond Police Department responded to a shooting on Perry Lane and found Kendrick Nixon Sr., 60, suffering from a gunshot wound in his chest. Nixon was transported to the hospital, where he died two weeks later, police said.
During the investigation in May, witnesses identified Kemlyn Lomas, 56, of Gonzales as the suspect who allegedly shot Nixon. Lomas had left the scene by the time the police arrived.
Later that day, Lomas turned herself in to the Hammond Police Department and was arrested for attempted manslaughter, illegal use of a weapon, and aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon. She posted a $250,000 bond the same day and was released with an ankle monitor. Her next court date was in September.
The police are waiting on results from the autopsy to determine if they will update the charges.
Lomas told the police in May, after she was Mirandized, that she confronted Nixon at a residence on Perry Lane because she believed he was there with another woman, police said. Lomas and Nixon got into a physical altercation and Lomas deployed her taser on Nixon.
Lomas then got her personal firearm out of her vehicle and, during a struggle with Nixon, allegedly shot him in the chest.
This is an ongoing investigation.
