A man was arrested Saturday in connection with a 2021 double homicide that took the lives of a 22-year-old man and his 5-year-old nephew as they sat in a vehicle on Brightside Drive, Baton Rouge Police said.

Dexter Reed, who was identified as a suspect in 2023, was in federal prison in Texas at the time, for previous charges, BRPD said in a news release.

On Friday, Reed, 28, was released from the Texas prison and extradited back to Louisiana, where he was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on two counts of first-degree murder, six counts of attempted first-degree murder, assault by drive-by shooting, illegal use of weapons and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

The victims, 22-year-old Michael Riley and his nephew, 5-year-old Carson Riley, were sitting in the back seat of a vehicle in the 1000 block of Brightside Drive when gunfire erupted, striking both of them.

Michael died at the scene, and Carson was transported to the hospital, where he later died, police said.
