As Louisiana's season of magnolia blooms come to an end, these honeybees take advantage of the opportunity to gather as much pollen as possible from this magnolia's stamens as they fall from the flower's core into its petals.
The peak blooming time for magnolias is May. This year, the flowers continued blooming through mid-June.
The magnolia is the state flower of both Louisiana and Mississippi. The flower is heavily associated with endurance, beauty, nobility, along with a balance of strength and gentleness.
On a side note, the oldest trees on the White House grounds are two Southern Magnolias planted between 1829 and 1837 by President Andrew Jackson. They were planted in honor of his late wife, Rachel.
As for honeybees, they are highly social and known for pollinating crops and producing honey. A single colony contains tens of thousands of workers, drones and one queen.
Honeybees play a critical role in agriculture but have faced population declines due to chemical use and habitat loss. If you discover a colony of honey bees on your property, contact a local beekeeper, your parish extension office or a specialized bee rescue service, which can collect and relocate them to a safe apiary.
For now, enjoy the honeybees as they revel in the pollen.
