Wetter conditions move into Acadiana heading into the weekend. Forecasters warn that periods of heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances will increase Friday, with showers and thunderstorms expected mainly before 4 p.m. Forecasters predict a high near 77 degrees with rainfall totals between a quarter- and half-inch possible during the day.

Additional storms are expected Friday night, with showers and thunderstorms becoming more widespread after 7 p.m. Rain chances remain high into Saturday, when forecasters say some storms could produce heavy rainfall. Saturday carries a 90% chance of precipitation and a high near 80 degrees.

Mother’s Day will be mostly sunny with a high near 84 and a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Meteorologists at KATC-TV said Acadiana could receive between 3 and 4 inches of rain by early next week. The rainfall is expected to provide relief for areas dealing with ongoing drought conditions.

While thunderstorms are expected throughout the weekend, forecasters say storms are expected to remain below severe weather criteria.

Rain chances will continue into Sunday, including a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day, before drier conditions return early next week.
